Equality, diversity and inclusion policy

Hellenic Cultural Society of Bristol “Methexis” is committed to fostering an environment that respects and values equality, diversity and inclusion among our workforce, and eliminating unlawful discrimination.

This Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Policy outlines our dedication to creating a culture that celebrates differences and empowers individuals, while preventing discrimination and promoting equal opportunities for all. This policy applies to all aspects of our organisation's operations, including but not limited to recruitment, employment, volunteerism, provision of services, events, and interactions within our community.

Purpose

This policy’s purpose is to:

1. Provide equality, fairness and respect for all in our organisation.

2. Not unlawfully discriminate because of the Equality Act 2010 protected characteristics of:

• age

• disability

• gender reassignment

• marriage and civil partnership

• pregnancy and maternity

• race (including colour, nationality, and ethnic or national origin)

• religion or belief

• sex

• sexual orientation

3. Oppose and avoid all forms of unlawful discrimination. This includes in:

• pay and benefits

• terms and conditions of employment

• dealing with grievances and discipline

• dismissal

• redundancy

• leave for parents

• requests for flexible working

• selection for employment, promotion, training or other developmental opportunities

Principles

Equality: Hellenic Cultural Society of Bristol Methexis believes in treating everyone with fairness and impartiality, regardless of their race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, belief, gender, sexual orientation, age, disability, or any other characteristic.

Diversity: Hellenic Cultural Society of Bristol Methexis recognises and celebrate the richness that diversity brings to our community. Embraces differences in backgrounds, experiences, perspectives, and identities, acknowledging that they enrich our organisation and enhance creativity and innovation.

Inclusion: Hellenic Cultural Society of Bristol Methexis is committed to creating an inclusive environment where all individuals feel valued, respected, and empowered to contribute fully. We actively seek to remove barriers to participation and ensure that everyone has equal access to opportunities and resources.

Non-Discrimination: Hellenic Cultural Society of Bristol Methexis rejects all forms of discrimination, harassment, bullying, victimization, and prejudice. Promote a culture of tolerance, understanding, and acceptance, where discriminatory behavior is not tolerated and is addressed promptly and effectively.

Responsibilities

Board of Trustees: The Board of Trustees is responsible for overseeing the implementation of this policy, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, and promoting a culture of equality, diversity, and inclusion within the organization.

Employees/Contractors/Volunteers:All staff and volunteers are expected to uphold the principles of this policy in their conduct and interactions. They should treat others with dignity and respect, challenge discriminatory behavior, and contribute to creating an inclusive and welcoming environment.

Members and Participants: Members and participants are encouraged to actively engage in promoting equality, diversity, and inclusion within the organization. They should respect the rights and dignity of others, participate in diversity initiatives, and provide feedback to help improve our practices.

Implementation

To operationalize this policy, we will:

• Provide training and awareness-raising initiatives to staff, volunteers, and members on equality, diversity, and inclusion topics.

• Review and update our policies, procedures, and practices to ensure they are inclusive and free from discrimination.

• Monitor and evaluate our progress towards achieving equality, diversity, and inclusion objectives and take corrective action where necessary.

• Encourage open dialogue and communication channels for reporting concerns, grievances, or suggestions related to equality, diversity, and inclusion.

• Collaborate with relevant external organizations and stakeholders to promote best practices and exchange knowledge on equality, diversity, and inclusion.

Breaches of Policy

All complaints of discrimination will be sensitively investigated and, if proven, will result in appropriate action for the perpetrator. Any employee /volunteer or participant found to be in breach of this policy could be subject to disciplinary action.

Investigation and Resolution

Upon receiving a report the organisation is obliged to conduct a thorough investigation to determine the facts of the case. The investigation will be conducted impartially, respecting the rights of all parties involved. If the investigation substantiates the allegations, appropriate disciplinary action will be taken up to/and including termination of employment/ termination of volunteering status or membeship.

Data Protection

Hellenic Cultural Society of Bristol “Methexis” will maintain received records, including details of the complaints, investigation, and resolution. These records will be kept confidential and in accordance with applicable laws and regulations. Records of grievance hearings should be kept confidential and retained in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998 and Hellenic Cultural Society of Bristol “Methexis” GDPR Policy.

Review and Updates

This Equality, diversity and inclusion Policy will be reviewed periodically to ensure its effectiveness and compliance with applicable laws and regulations. Updates may be made as necessary to reflect changes in the organization's structure, operations or legal requirements.
